Antelope Island State Park … July 31

Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake and is home to free-roaming herds of bison, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and pronghorn antelope. Antelope Island can be accessed by crossing over on a 7-mile paved causeway. Spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountains can be seen from the island.

Antelope Island got its name in 1845 after a successful antelope hunt by John C. Fremont and Kit Carson. Fremont wrote: "On the island we found grass and water and several bands of antelope. Some of these were killed, and in memory of the grateful supply of food they furnished, I gave their name to the island."

The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. The Great Salt Lake is currently 75 miles long by 28 miles wide covering 1,700 square miles. The salinity level ranges between four and 28 percent compared to the ocean at three percent.
